The King Wen Sequencewhy 1 → 2 → 3 → ... → 64, and what the order itself teaches

Not just an ordering — a single narrative

The 64 hexagrams are not a random list. From Hex 1 (乾, Heaven) to Hex 64 (未濟, Before Completion), every step has a stated reason — given by 序卦傳, the “Discussion of the Sequence” in the Ten Wings: because the previous hexagram's situation has reached a certain point, the next must follow.

The whole sequence is one narrative — from the founding of heaven-and-earth to the ever-incomplete. Readers who finish all 64 without 通透 often miss this layer: they treat the hexagrams as 64 separate entries instead of 64 chapters of one continuous story.

What the 序卦傳 is

The 序卦傳 is one of the Ten Wings, traditionally attributed to Confucius (most modern scholars date the received text to late Warring States — early Han). It is a continuous prose commentary on the order: between every two adjacent hexagrams, a sentence of the form “Nothing can end in X forever — therefore Y follows.”

Its philosophical stance: the 64 hexagrams reflect the necessary changes of all things — fullness must yield emptiness, flow must yield blockage, gathering must yield dispersion, completion must give way to the next beginning. Read continuously, the sequence is the complete map of Chinese philosophy of change.

Structure: 32 pairs, 4 opposite-only, 28 inverse-most

The 64 hexagrams are arranged in 32 pairs. Each second hexagram in a pair is the inverse (綜卦) of the first — the six lines flipped upside down. But 8 hexagrams are their own inverse, so they pair instead by opposite (錯卦) — every line flipped yin-to-yang. The four pure-opposite pairs are shown above. The remaining 56 hexagrams form 28 inverse pairs. Total: 32 pairs.

Upper / Lower Canon — cosmos → human affairs

By the Han, the 64 hexagrams were already divided into Upper Canon (1–30) and Lower Canon (31–64). The Upper opens with 乾 / 坤 (heaven / earth) and closes with 坎 / 離 (water / fire) — its theme is cosmology: the structures and forces of the world. The Lower opens with 咸 / 恆 (mutual influence / duration) and closes with 既濟 / 未濟 (after and before completion) — its theme is human affairs: relationship, society, transformation.

Not two books. One book in two faces — cosmos first, then the human predicament inside that cosmos. 《繫辭傳》: “Heaven and earth set the positions, and change moves between them.”

Four hinges of the narrative

The entire sequence of 64 hexagrams can be grasped through four key pivots:

1
Hex 1–3 — opening

Heaven and earth are established; the myriad things begin to be born; the first concrete hexagram is 屯 — the difficulty of sprouting. The Yi does not begin from perfection — it begins from the difficulty of beginning.

2
Hex 11 / 12 — peace and standstill

After flourishing peace must come stagnation. The Yi's warning to every era of prosperity: abundance does not last; reversal is built in.

3
Hex 29 / 30 → 31 — cosmos closes, humans open

The Upper Canon ends with Kan and Li — pitfall and brightness, the two cosmic dynamics. The Lower opens with Xian — mutual influence between two people. The transition from natural forces to human heart is the largest hinge in the 64.

4
Hex 63 → 64 — finish, then unfinish

The Yi does not end at Jiji (after completion). It ends at Weiji (before completion). The deepest sentence in Chinese philosophy may be the one that closes the 序卦傳: 'Nothing can be exhausted — hence Weiji, and there it ends.' Completion is always followed by another beginning.

Key passages of the 序卦傳

Hex (始)(始)Hex 11

Heaven and earth exist, then the myriad things are born. The space between is filled — hence Zhun (difficulty at the beginning). Zhun means filling.

Hex 33Hex 44

Zhun is the first stirring of things. What is just born is unenlightened — hence Meng. Meng is the youth of things.

Hex 1010Hex 1111

Walking with care brings peace — hence Tai. Nothing can flow forever — so Pi (standstill) follows.

Hex 1212Hex 13

Standstill cannot last — hence Tongren (fellowship).

Hex 1818Hex 1919

Where there is pitfall, there must be attachment — hence Li. Li means attachment to brightness.

Hex 3030Hex 3131

Heaven and earth give rise to things, things to man and woman, man and woman to husband and wife — hence Xian (mutual influence).

Hex 3939Hex 4040

Difficulty cannot be permanent — hence Jie (deliverance).

Practice — read the sequence

Three exercises after reading. (1) Read Hexagrams 11–16 in sequence — the canonical six-stage arc from peace through complacency to its restoration. (2) Read the transition 30 → 31 — why does the Yi end its cosmological canon on two natural forces and open the human canon on two people? That structural choice is itself a philosophical position. (3) Read 63 → 64 — why does the Yi end on incompletion? “Nothing can be exhausted” — how does this appear in your own work, relationships, and life?
