漸:女歸吉,利貞。
漸卦——女子嫁出吉,利於守正。婚姻之事須循序漸進,不可躁急。
Jian suggests the auspiciousness of a young lady being married. There will be advantage in being firm and correct.
漸之進也,女歸吉也。進得位,往有功也。進以正,可以正邦也。其位剛得中也。止而巽,動不窮也。
漸的進步,是女子歸嫁的吉象。前進得位,往有功。以正前進,可以正邦國。其位剛得中。止(艮)而巽(順),動而不窮。
The advance shown in Jian indicates the good fortune of a young lady being married. Those who advance reach their proper place: their advance will be followed by achievement.

山上有木,漸
(The trigram representing) a mountain, and above it that for a tree, form Jian.
君子以居賢德善俗。
The superior man, in accordance with this, attains to and maintains his extraordinary virtue, and makes the manners of the people good.
山上有木——漸之象(木在山上漸長)。君子由此體會:要居於賢德、改善風俗。

鴻漸于干,小子厲,有言無咎。
鴻雁漸進於水邊——少年人有險,受到責難但無咎。漸之初須慎。
The first SIX shows the wild geese gradually approaching the shore. A young officer (in similar circumstances) will be in a position of danger, and be spoken against; but there will be no error.
小子之厲,義無咎也。
少年之險,按理無咎。
鴻漸于磐,飲食衎衎,吉。
鴻雁漸進於磐石——飲食和樂,吉。柔得中位,安處而樂。
The second SIX shows the geese gradually approaching the large rocks, where they eat and drink joyfully and at ease. There will be good fortune.
飲食衎衎,不素飽也。
飲食和樂,不是只為飽腹。
鴻漸于陸,夫征不復,婦孕不育,凶。利禦寇。
鴻雁漸進於高地——丈夫遠征不返,婦人懷孕不能育子——凶。利於防禦盜寇。剛在剛位過剛則離。
The third NINE shows the geese gradually advanced to the dry plains. (It suggests also the idea of) a husband who goes on an expedition from which he does not return, and of a wife who is pregnant, but will not nourish her child. There will be evil. (The case symbolised) might be advantageous in resisting plunderers.
夫征不復,離群醜也。婦孕不育,失其道也。利用禦寇,順相保也。
夫征不返,是離群醜。婦孕不育,失正道。禦寇之利,是順以相保。
鴻漸于木,或得其桷,無咎。
鴻雁漸進於樹上——或可棲於平直的樹枝上——無咎。柔得位、得安處。
The fourth SIX shows the geese gradually advanced to the trees. They may light on the flat branches. There will be no error.
或得其桷,順以巽也。
得平直之枝,是順而能巽。
鴻漸于陵,婦三歲不孕,終莫之勝,吉。
鴻雁漸進於山陵——婦人三年不孕,最終無人能阻——吉。剛中得位、堅持而成。
The fifth NINE shows the geese gradually advanced to the high mound. (It suggests the idea of) a wife who for three years does not become pregnant; but in the end the natural issue cannot be prevented. There will be good fortune.
終莫之勝吉,得所願也。
終莫之勝吉,是得其所願。
鴻漸于陸,其羽可用為儀,吉。
鴻雁漸進於高地——其羽毛可作為儀容之用,吉。漸之至成,羽飾可用為禮。
The topmost NINE shows the geese gradually advanced to the high plains. Their feathers can be used as ornaments. There will be good fortune.
其羽可用為儀吉,不可亂也。
羽毛為儀之吉,是不可亂之德。
Gradual advance, step by step — progress that refuses to skip stages.
The wild goose — the hexagram's signature image, a bird that migrates in ordered formation.
The water's edge, the shore — the goose's first and lowest station.
A great rock — broad, stable footing.
Contented and at ease — the look of feasting in peace.
Properly a square rafter; here, a flat straight branch — the one perch on a tree where a web-footed goose can stand.
A high mound, a hill.
Rite, ceremonial regalia — the feathers used as ornament in ritual.
