The Great Image derives conduct from the two trigrams' natural images.Great Image

Whole image

(The trigram representing) the earth and that for the bright (sun) coming forth above it form Jin.

Conduct

The superior man, in accordance with this, gives himself to make more brilliant his bright virtue.

(The trigram representing) the earth and that for the bright (sun) coming forth above it form Jin. The superior man, in accordance with this, gives himself to make more brilliant his bright virtue.

Words

The received text, then the Tuan commentary on it.

The judgment on the hexagram as a whole.
Judgment

In Jin we see a prince who secures the tranquillity (of the people), presented on that account with numerous horses (by the king), and three times in a day received at interviews.

Tuan Zhuan — explains the name, the Judgment and the line structure.
Commentary on the Judgment

In Jin we have advance. (We see in it) the bright sun coming forth above the earth; (the symbol of) docile submission cleaving to that of the Great Brightness.

Progress · self-illuminating · no fear of loss/gain

Apply the image to your situation
Wanting promotion but blocked — hold firm, generously wait.
Advance with worry — central virtue earns elder's support.
Promoted with everyone's agreement — regret gone.
Greedy and suspicious — wanting new and fearing to lose old, perilous.
Senior's auspicious is non-attachment to gains — auspicious to advance.
At the top — only small uses; pushing further leads to regret.
Practical move

Jin's deepest applications: 'self-illuminating virtue' + 'no anxiety over loss/gain'. True advance is illumination of inner virtue, not grasping at position. Worst: line 4's 'marmot' — wanting and fearing simultaneously. Peak: line 5's non-attachment.

Failure mode

Line 4 'marmot' — the modern career's most common failure. Wanting promotion but fearing to lose the present, paralyzed in between. To advance, dare to release — otherwise you're the greedy rat.

Wang Bi holds that Jin's meaning lies in 'brightness coming forth above the earth' — at sunrise, light comes of itself; such is the virtue of the Marquis Kang. What most deserves remembering is the Da Xiang's 'making one's own bright virtue shine' (zi zhao ming de 自昭明德) — no one else makes you luminous; you display your own virtue yourself.

Cheng Yi stresses that the advance of Jin is 'advancing with the time,' not forcing one's way forward. He takes line 5's 'do not fret over loss and gain' as the master of the whole hexagram — only one who can set down the reckoning of gain and loss can truly advance.

Zhu Xi puts it plainly: Jin means advance. The image is brightness coming forth above the earth — the hour of sunrise. Yet the hexagram is not wholly auspicious: line 4's 'marmot' is the counter-case — advancing out of greed and full of suspicion leads surely to harm. The student learns from this that true advance is advance with virtue, not advance out of greed.

Modern lineageIntroductory

Jin is sunrise: brightness comes out above the earth, day has broken, time to move forward. How to move, the Da Xiang settles in one line — 'the superior man makes his own bright virtue shine.' The light comes from you; you show your character to people directly. Relying on introductions, waiting to be pulled up — there's always a layer in between. The counter-example is line 4, 'advancing like a marmot: peril' — the marmot can do a bit of everything and nothing well, greedy to climb and suspicious at heart, and the higher it climbs the more dangerous the footing. The hexagram peaks at line 5, 'do not fret over loss and gain; going forward is auspicious, nothing fails to profit': on the way up, nothing tangles you like the ledger of gains and losses — the more carefully you keep it, the more your steps stumble. Put the ledger down and walk out, and everything goes smoothly.

Jin and Ming Yi — sunrise and sunset

Hexagram 35 Jin (sunrise) and Hexagram 36 Ming Yi (sunset) form an inverse pair. The sequence teaches that the cycle of rising and falling is the norm — since one can rise, there will also be a darkening of the light.

'Self-illuminating one's bright virtue' — root of cultivation

The Da Xiang's 'the superior man makes his own bright virtue shine' is the source of the Great Learning's 'making bright virtue brilliant' (ming ming de 明明德). The root of self-cultivation is not being discovered by others; it is displaying the virtue within you yourself.

'Not worrying about loss or gain' — Daoist undertone

Line 5's 'do not fret over loss and gain' carries a distinctly Daoist undertone — only one who can drop the calculus of gain and loss can truly advance. The later maxim 'neither delighted by things nor grieved for oneself' echoes it.

'Marmot's greed' — the most concrete warning

Line 4's 'advancing like a marmot' uses the shishu 鼫鼠 — a large rat, proverbially greedy and suspicious — as the image of advance gone wrong: wanting to grasp everything while fearing every loss. It is the most concrete portrait of human failing in all sixty-four hexagrams.
