Judgment and its commentary

Read the received text first, then its Tuan commentary.

The judgment on the hexagram as a whole.
Judgment

Tong Ren or Union of men appears here (as we find it) in the open country, indicating progress and success. It will be advantageous to (meet with) the great stream. It will be advantageous to maintain the firm correctness of the superior man.

James Legge · 1899
Tuan Zhuan — commentary explaining the name, Judgment, and line structure.
Commentary on the Judgment

In Tong Ren the weak (line) has the place (of influence), the central place, and responds to (the corresponding line in) Qian — only the superior man can comprehend and direct the (subtleties of the) minds of all under heaven.

James Legge · 1899

The Great Image derives conduct from the two trigrams' natural images; it is not a continuation of the Tuan.

Great Image Commentary

Trigrams → whole image → conduct

Trigrams
· Upper · Heaven
· Lower · Fire
Whole image

(The trigrams representing) heaven and fire form Tong Ren.

Conduct

The superior man, in accordance with this, distinguishes things according to their kinds and classes.
