二陽生、陽長至中位前、居高臨下之卦

臨：元、亨、利、貞。至于八月有凶。
臨——啟動、通達、有利、守正。但到了八月就有凶。 二陽在下而上行，氣勢正盛；但卦辭提示：盛中已含衰，到對應的八月（觀卦之時），陽將退而凶。
Lin (indicates that under the conditions which it supposes) there will be great progress and success, while it will be advantageous to be firm and correct. In the eighth month there will be evil.
臨，剛浸而長。說而順，剛中而應。大亨以正，天之道也。「至于八月有凶」，消不久也。
臨——剛（陽）正在浸潤生長。下卦兌悅、上卦坤順——剛在中位而與上相應。大通以正，是天的道。「至于八月有凶」——消退也不會太久。
In Lin (we see) the strong (lines) gradually increasing and advancing. (The lower trigram is the symbol of) being pleased, and (the upper of) being compliant. The strong (line) is in the central place, and is properly responded to. 'There is great progress and success, along with firm correctness:'—this is the way of Heaven. 'In the eighth month there will be evil:'—(the advancing power) will decay after no long time.

澤上有地，臨
(The trigram representing) the land above and that for the waters of a marsh below it form Lin.
君子以教思无窮，容保民无疆。
The superior man, in accordance with this, has inexhaustible (purpose) to teach, and exercises a forbearance and protection towards the people without limit.
澤之上有地——臨的圖象。 君子仿效此象：教化與思慮無窮盡，容納保護人民無邊疆。 （地在澤之上：地高、澤低，但地不是壓在澤上而是看顧它。臨的政治意義—在上位者要居高而顧下，不是居高而壓下。）

咸臨，貞吉。
和合地臨—守正則吉。 初九與六四相應，剛柔相感，所以「咸」（皆/感）。
The first NINE, undivided, shows its subject advancing in company (with the subject of the second line). Through his firm correctness there will be good fortune.
咸臨貞吉，志行正也。
咸臨守正吉——心志行於正道。
'He advances in company with (the subject of the second line) with firm correctness, and there will be good fortune:'—his mind is bent on doing what is right.
咸臨，吉，无不利。
和合地臨——吉，无不利。 九二是全卦的主陽，得中位、力量足。
The second NINE, undivided, shows its subject advancing in company (with the subject of the first line). There will be good fortune; advancing will be in every way advantageous.
咸臨吉无不利，未順命也。
咸臨吉无不利——還沒有完全順從命運（自己仍在主動）。
'He advances in company (with the subject of the first line). There will be good fortune; advancing will be in every way advantageous':—the will (of his minister) does not (yet) follow (the will of his ruler).
甘臨，无攸利。既憂之，无咎。
用甜言軟語來臨——沒有利處。但已知道憂慮反省—無咎。
The third SIX, divided, shows one well pleased (indeed) to advance, (but whose action) will be in no way advantageous. If he become anxious about it (however), there will be no error.
甘臨，位不當也；既憂之，咎不長也。
甘臨——位不當的緣故；已經憂慮—過失不會長。
'He is well pleased (indeed) to advance:'—but his place is not the appropriate one for him. 'If he become anxious about it':—his error will not be continued.
至臨，无咎。
極致地臨——無咎。 六四與初九相應，至誠而無過失。
The fourth SIX, divided, shows one advancing in the highest excellence. There will be no error.
至臨无咎，位當也。
至臨無咎——位置正當。
'He advances in the highest excellence, and there will be no error':—he is in the correct place for him.
知臨，大君之宜，吉。
用智慧來臨——大君該有的樣子，吉。 六五是君位但為陰柔，知用賢人（九二）而不親自干涉，是大君之智。
The fifth SIX, divided, shows the advance of wisdom and (such as) befits the great ruler. There will be good fortune.
大君之宜，行中之謂也。
大君之宜——行中道之謂。
'(Advancing in the way) befitting the great ruler':—it indicates the carrying out of the course of the Mean.
敦臨，吉，无咎。
敦厚地臨——吉，無咎。 上六處卦之終，不凶反吉，因其厚道而能守。
The topmost SIX, divided, shows the advance of honest generosity. There will be good fortune, and no error.
敦臨之吉，志在內也。
敦臨之吉——心志仍在內。
'The good fortune attached to the advance of honest generosity' is owing to the will (of the subject of the line) being set on the (two) inner (lines of the trigram).
Approach, oversee, look down on. Same character used in 'face' (面臨), 'be on the verge of' (臨終), 'high vantage looking down' (居高臨下). The hexagram's name carries all these senses.
All; together; resonance. Lines 1 and 2 share this word — the two yang lines acting in coordination.
Sweet; pleasing. Line 3's character — 'sweet approach' = approach with flattery / soft words / unearned pleasantness. Read negatively here.
Arrive at; ultimate; supreme. Line 4's character — 'ultimate approach' = full sincerity, no holding back.
Wisdom; knowing. Line 5's character — 'wise approach' = knowing when to use others rather than acting yourself.
Thick, generous, sincere. Line 6's character — 'generous approach' = a depth of substance that doesn't flag at the end.
The eighth lunar month — corresponds to 觀 in the 12-cycle. The judgment's warning that the advancing yang of Lin will, in due time, be reversed at 觀.
