Read the image before the words.
(The trigram representing) the land above and that for the waters of a marsh below it form Lin.
The superior man, in accordance with this, has inexhaustible (purpose) to teach, and exercises a forbearance and protection towards the people without limit.
(The trigram representing) the land above and that for the waters of a marsh below it form Lin. The superior man, in accordance with this, has inexhaustible (purpose) to teach, and exercises a forbearance and protection towards the people without limit.
The received text, then the Tuan commentary on it.
Lin (indicates that under the conditions which it supposes) there will be great progress and success, while it will be advantageous to be firm and correct. In the eighth month there will be evil.
In Lin (we see) the strong (lines) gradually increasing and advancing. (The lower trigram is the symbol of) being pleased, and (the upper of) being compliant. The strong (line) is in the central place, and is properly responded to. 'There is great progress and success, along with firm correctness:'—this is the way of Heaven. 'In the eighth month there will be evil:'—(the advancing power) will decay after no long time.
One statement per line, read from the first line to the top. The figure is drawn bottom-up — watch the rail.
The first NINE, undivided, shows its subject advancing in company (with the subject of the second line). Through his firm correctness there will be good fortune.
'He advances in company with (the subject of the second line) with firm correctness, and there will be good fortune:'—his mind is bent on doing what is right.
The second NINE, undivided, shows its subject advancing in company (with the subject of the first line). There will be good fortune; advancing will be in every way advantageous.
'He advances in company (with the subject of the first line). There will be good fortune; advancing will be in every way advantageous':—the will (of his minister) does not (yet) follow (the will of his ruler).
The third SIX, divided, shows one well pleased (indeed) to advance, (but whose action) will be in no way advantageous. If he become anxious about it (however), there will be no error.
'He is well pleased (indeed) to advance:'—but his place is not the appropriate one for him. 'If he become anxious about it':—his error will not be continued.
The fourth SIX, divided, shows one advancing in the highest excellence. There will be no error.
'He advances in the highest excellence, and there will be no error':—he is in the correct place for him.
The fifth SIX, divided, shows the advance of wisdom and (such as) befits the great ruler. There will be good fortune.
'(Advancing in the way) befitting the great ruler':—it indicates the carrying out of the course of the Mean.
The topmost SIX, divided, shows the advance of honest generosity. There will be good fortune, and no error.
'The good fortune attached to the advance of honest generosity' is owing to the will (of the subject of the line) being set on the (two) inner (lines of the trigram).
Apply the image to your situation; take one practical step.
A view from a higher vantage: overseeing without pressing down, holding the field with care.
Lin and Guan (Contemplation) are the same two yang lines in different positions. Lin: yang below, actively rising. Guan: yang above, observed from below. Reading Lin always implies its inverse, Guan.
Drawing Lin marks you on a rising-momentum phase. Force is building but hasn't peaked, so push forward without celebrating too soon, and start planning now for the reversal the eighth-month warning points to, seven months out. Line 2's mastery is centrality: advance, but don't overreach. Line 5 teaches the leadership wisdom of using others rather than acting yourself, and the great image teaches that the higher position holds people through teaching and embrace, not through pressure and punishment.
Misreading Lin as 'I've made it, time to enjoy' is a mistake. Line 5's wisdom is being at the top yet not acting personally; Lin's whole teaching is rising while not losing centrality. The biggest failure is line 3's 'sweet approach': sweet words, surface work, shortcuts via flattery. Lin explicitly says this leads to no advantage.
Lin is the name of yang (firm) gradually moistening and growing. Yang advances from below and reaches the central position, hence great progress and the benefit of correctness. But nothing can flourish forever: 'in the eighth month there will be evil' warns people, in the midst of flourishing, to anticipate the seed of decline.
Two yang lines advance and oversee four yin: this is the time of Lin. Though yang's strength is not yet at its peak, its momentum already moves upward; the lower trigram is delight, the upper compliance; the firm-and-central responds and brings great success through correctness. The sage observing this establishes a teaching: in flourishing time already worry about decline. Thus 'in the eighth month there will be evil,' meaning that not indulging during the peak is how the gentleman secures the ending.
Lin means 'advancing and pressing close to things.' Two yang lines encroach and grow, pressing against the four yin, and so it is Lin. It is the hexagram of the twelfth month. 'The eighth month' means counting from Fu, the month of one yang, to Dun, the month of two yin, when yin grows and yang withdraws. Some say it means the eighth month of the Xia calendar, whose hexagram is Guan, Lin turned upside down. The warning is attached to the divination.
Lin sits at the twelfth lunar month in the cycle of twelve sovereign hexagrams, around the Great Cold: two yang lines have risen from the bottom and are pressing toward the center. What defines this phase is trajectory: strength has not peaked, but it keeps climbing. The early rise of a venture, the upward stretch of learning a new field, both walk this same segment. The master line is nine in the second place, firm and central, power grown into a position that knows proportion. Yet the judgment speaks sternly at exactly this moment: 'in the eighth month there will be misfortune.' Count eight months on from Lin and you reach Guan, where yin is past half, and the present ascent will turn back when that time comes. So on seeing Lin, hold the excitement; while things are still climbing, work out the way down before the descent arrives. Line 5, 'wise overseeing, fitting for a great ruler,' is the lesson at the other end: the ruler's seat is a yielding line, so stay out of the arena yourself, hand the work to someone like line 2, and keep the whole in view from above without reaching down to meddle. The great image completes the bearing: 'teaching and care without end, embracing and protecting the people without limit.' Those above hold what is below through instruction and generosity; power alone cannot press that effect into being.
Approach, oversee, look down on. Same character used in 'face' (面臨), 'be on the verge of' (臨終), 'high vantage looking down' (居高臨下). The hexagram's name carries all these senses.
All; together; resonance. Lines 1 and 2 share this word — the two yang lines acting in coordination.
Sweet; pleasing. Line 3's character — 'sweet approach' = approach with flattery / soft words / unearned pleasantness. Read negatively here.
Arrive at; ultimate; supreme. Line 4's character — 'ultimate approach' = full sincerity, no holding back.
Wisdom; knowing. Line 5's character — 'wise approach' = knowing when to use others rather than acting yourself.
Thick, generous, sincere. Line 6's character — 'generous approach' = a depth of substance that doesn't flag at the end.
The eighth month. Counted either from Fu (復) to Dun (遯), or as the Xia-calendar eighth month, Guan (觀). The judgment uses it to warn that Lin's rise will turn.
Lin corresponds to the 12th lunar month (late January, the Great Cold solar term), the cycle phase of two yang lines having risen. From one-yang Fu / Return (11th month) to two-yang Lin (12th) to three-yang Tai / Peace (1st month, the Beginning of Spring solar term) is the complete arc of yang's ascent. Lin sits in the middle of this arc, momentum still accumulating.
Lin and Guan (Contemplation, hexagram 20) read upside-down become each other, an inverse pair. Lin's two yang lines, having risen, oversee from above; Guan's two yang lines, having retreated, are observed from below. The same two yang lines occupy different positions: one actively advancing, the other passively observed. Reading Lin always implies Guan, and vice versa. The judgment's 'in the eighth month' specifically points at Guan.
The great image, 'the gentleman, accordingly, has inexhaustible purpose to teach and exercises forbearance and protection toward the people without limit,' speaks to governance by virtue. Since the Han, Confucian scholars have often invoked this line against the Legalist emphasis on strict law and harsh punishment. Lin's political wisdom lies not in controlling through power but in leading through teaching and embrace. In today's terms, leadership works through education and inclusion, not command and punishment alone.
Commentators count 'in the eighth month there will be evil' in different ways. Zheng Xuan placed Lin in the second month of the Zhou calendar (the twelfth of the Xia calendar) and counted to the Zhou eighth month, when Dun (Retreat, the Xia sixth month) takes over. Zhu Xi's Original Meaning counts eight months from Fu, the one-yang hexagram of the eleventh month, to Dun, the two-yin hexagram of the sixth; he also records another view, that it means Guan of the Xia eighth month, which is Lin turned upside down. The starting points differ, the point does not: once yang has grown to its height, yin comes back, and the time to think about the turn is while things are going well.
