The judgment on the hexagram as a whole.
Judgment

Khwan (represents) what is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and having the firmness of a mare. When the superior man (here intended) has to make any movement, if he take the initiative, he will go astray; if he follow, he will find his (proper) lord. The advantageousness will be seen in his getting friends in the south-west, and losing friends in the north-east. If he rest in correctness and firmness, there will be good fortune.

Tuan Zhuan — explains the name, the Judgment and the line structure.
Commentary on the Judgment

Complete is the 'great and originating (capacity)' indicated by Khwan! All things owe to it their birth;—it receives obediently the influences of Heaven. Khwan, in its largeness, supports and contains all things. Its excellent capacity matches the unlimited power (of Khien). Its comprehension is wide, and its brightness great. The various things obtain (by it) their full development. The mare is a creature of earthly kind. Its (power of) moving on the earth is without limit; it is mild and docile, advantageous and firm:—such is the course of the superior man. 'If he take the initiative, he goes astray':—he misses, that is, his proper course. 'If he follow,' he is docile, and gets into his regular (course). 'In the south-west he will get friends':—he will be walking with those of his own class. 'In the north-east he will lose friends':—but in the end there will be ground for congratulation. 'The good fortune arising from resting in firmness' corresponds to the unlimited capacity of the earth.

Lines

One statement per line, read from the first line to the top. The figure is drawn bottom-up — watch the rail.

初六
小徵兆first sign

In the first SIX, divided, (we see its subject) treading on hoarfrost. The strong ice will come (by and by).

Xiao Xiang — short classical commentary on this line.

'He is treading on hoar-frost; the strong ice will come by and by':—the cold (air) has begun to take form. Allow it to go on quietly (according to its nature), and it will come to strong ice.

The second SIX, divided, (shows the attribute of) being straight, square, and great. (Its operation), without repeated efforts, will be in every respect advantageous.

Xiao Xiang — short classical commentary on this line.

The movement shown in the second SIX is 'from straightness and squareness;' '(the operation), without repeated efforts, in every way advantageous,' shows the brilliant result of the way of earth.

The third SIX, divided, (shows its subject) keeping his excellence under restraint, but firmly maintaining it. If he should have occasion to engage in the king's service, though he will not claim the success (for himself), he will bring affairs to a good issue.

Xiao Xiang — short classical commentary on this line.

'He keeps his excellence under restraint, but firmly maintains it:'—at the proper time he will manifest it. 'He may have occasion to engage in the king's service:'—great is the glory of his wisdom.

The fourth SIX, divided, (shows the symbol of) a sack tied up. There will be no ground for blame or for praise.

Xiao Xiang — short classical commentary on this line.

The fifth SIX, divided, (shows its subject with) the yellow lower-garment. There will be great good fortune.

Xiao Xiang — short classical commentary on this line.

The sixth SIX, divided, (shows) dragons fighting in the wild. Their blood is purple and yellow.

Xiao Xiang — short classical commentary on this line.

(The lines of this hexagram are all weak and divided, as appears from) the use of the number SIX. If those (who are thus represented) be perpetually correct and firm, advantage will arise.

Xiao Xiang — short classical commentary on this line.

'Perpetually correct and firm,' as indicated by the use of the number SIX, shows a great consummation.

Use

Apply the image to your situation; take one practical step.

A mare crossing the earth — not racing, not leading, but covering the greatest distance.

Apply the image to your situation
  1. 初六小跡象要當真take the first sign seriously
  2. 六二直方做好本分do your job straight and square

Yong Liu: compliance is not a momentary tactic, it is a long-held virtue. When all six lines are yin, stay firm in the proper course — this is the mature mode of Kun.

Practical move

Kun maps onto real life as six moments of not-grabbing, not-claiming, bearing, completing. Locate which line you're on and act accordingly: line 1 notice the small sign; line 2 do your work straight; line 3 don't claim credit; line 4 stay quiet; line 5 hold authority without display; line 6 don't push yielding to rupture. Kun is not 'passive' — it is strength in a different mode.

Failure mode

Reading Kun as 'always yielding' is wrong. Line 6 — 'dragons fighting in the wild' — warns that over-yielding turns into explosive conflict. Kun means 'bearing in time,' not 'unconditional retreat.'

魏晉 · 3rd c.王弼《周易注》Wang Bi, Commentary on the Zhou YiScholarly

'Earth' is the name of a form; 'compliance' (shun) is what uses that form. Qian and Kun are both images of things, but Qian operates by strength (jian) and Kun by compliance (shun). The superior man models himself on earth: he supports things through deep virtue, nothing more. The compliant one does not lead first; to lead first is to fail. Therefore — lead first and go astray, follow and find the lord.

南宋 · 12th c.朱熹《周易本義》Zhu Xi, The Original Meaning of the Zhou YiScholarly

The six lines are all pure yin, therefore the name Kun. 'Yuan heng' (great and penetrating) is the same as Qian's; but 'the firmness of a mare' (pin ma zhi zhen) — the mare is compliant yet strong, so it serves as the image of earth. 'Leading first goes astray; following gets the lord' — yin's principle is to come after, not to lead. Leading loses the way; following holds the constant course.

現代 Contemporary現代傳承(繼承倪海廈《天紀》象-first 讀法之精神,非逐字轉錄)Modern lineage (inheriting the image-first pedagogy of "Tian Ji", not transcribing)Introductory

Reading Kun as 'passive' is the standard mistake. Qian's power pushes outward, Kun's bears and carries; one opens, the other completes, and nothing gets finished missing either side. The mare, the deep load, brilliance held in, the tied sack, the yellow lower garment — the images describe one capability: not grabbing the lead, keeping strength sheathed, staying central without display. It is as complete a power as Qian's. The six lines are again six moments. Frost underfoot at the first — the smaller the sign, the more seriously to take it. Straight, square, great at the second: the earth's unstudied correctness. Brilliance contained at the third — able, and not yet showing it. The tied sack at the fourth, words drawn in. The yellow garment at the fifth, virtue worn low, greatly auspicious. Dragons fighting in the wild at the top, yielding pushed to its extreme and meeting yang head-on. Qian gives six moments of doing; Kun gives six of carrying — and both lines run through every undertaking at once.

kūn

Named after the doubled 坤 trigram. Image: Earth. Quality: pure yin, receptive, bearing, yielding. Pairs with 乾 as the other parent hexagram.

牝馬pìn mǎ

Mare — the signature animal of 坤. Strength through compliance. Covers great distance without contention.

shuāng

Frost. The first physical sign of accumulating cold. Read as: small early indication of a much larger accumulation.

括囊kuò náng

Tie up the sack. Close the mouth of the bag — let nothing in or out. The image of strategic silence and self-containment.

黃裳huáng cháng

Yellow lower-garment. Yellow = the color of the central element in 五行. Lower garment = below-the-waist robe. Reading: central excellence, worn below — refusing to be on top.

玄黃xuán huáng

Deep-dark and yellow. The colors of heaven (玄) and earth (黃) respectively; the mixture in the line-6 image shows both dragons wounded — conflict of the two pure powers.

Relationship with Qian (hexagram 1)

Qian and Kun are the 'parent hexagrams' of the 64. Qian is pure yang (Heaven), Kun is pure yin (Earth); all 62 other hexagrams can be read as different combinations of these two forces. The Xu Gua (Sequence of the Hexagrams): 'After there is Heaven and Earth, the myriad things are born.' Kun follows Qian directly, the second step of the Zhou Yi's opening.

The special status of the Wen Yan Zhuan

The Wen Yan is a dedicated exposition in the Ten Wings specifically for Qian and Kun — no other 62 hexagrams receive this treatment. It marks the classical tradition's emphasis on these two as foundational. Our Commentary tab quotes key Wen Yan passages.

Why Kun is often misread

Modern readers tend to read Kun as 'passive' or 'weak' — that's cultural prejudice, not the text. The Wen Yan is explicit: 'Khwan is most gentle but acts firmly, most still yet gives form with square precision.' Kun's power is real; it simply expresses differently than Qian. Compliance is not the absence of strength.
