Break any situation into three layers: timing (Heaven), foundation (Earth), and the people involved (Human). Miss one layer and the reading usually goes wrong.

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water aren't five substances; they're five modes of operation. Two cycles, generation and control, form the relational structure you can use to diagnose any stuck situation.

河圖生先天八卦，講的是本體；洛書生後天八卦，講的是應用。洛書也是世上已知最早的幻方。弄懂這套體系，之後讀古書遇到先天、後天、九宮這些詞就不會卡住。
Hetu generates the Xiantian (Fuxi) trigram arrangement, the structural reading. Luoshu generates the Houtian (King Wen) arrangement, the time-and-phase reading. Luoshu is also the earliest known magic square. Background worth having so xiantian, houtian, and jiugong stop being roadblocks in classical texts.

The core of Chinese time-keeping. Year, month, day, and hour each get a stem-branch label on a 60-cycle. Bazi astrology, ziwei astrology, and fengshui all build on this system.
六十四卦是一個連續的故事，不是一份清單
A continuous narrative, not a list of separate hexagrams
從第一卦乾到第六十四卦未濟，序卦傳每一步都給出過渡的理由。三十二對結構、上經與下經的劃分、為何全書收在「未濟」而不是「既濟」，這幾層弄懂了，六十四卦才算讀通。
From Hexagram 1 to Hexagram 64, the Sequence Commentary gives a stated reason for every transition. The 32-pair structure, the Upper and Lower Canon split, and why the book ends on 'before completion' rather than 'after completion': readers who finish all 64 hexagrams without grasping these usually miss this layer.

讀單一爻的六步程序
The six-step procedure for a single line
卦給的是整體的時機與趨勢，爻給的是你所在的具體位置。位置、時機、應、比、承、乘六個角度，再用中、正兩個判準覆核，讀爻不必靠字面注解，純靠結構與時機判斷。起卦後要讀變爻，這是最直接的工具。
The hexagram gives the overall timing and trend; the line gives your exact spot. Six angles (position, timing, correspondence, adjacency, support, override), checked against two criteria (centrality and correctness). Reading a line runs on structure and timing, not surface text. It's the most direct tool for reading a moving line after a cast.

Reading a single hexagram only shows part of the picture. Seeing the same trigram across the sixteen hexagrams it appears in reveals the pattern — that's what makes the reading systematic.

Line 5 is almost always 'ruler,' line 6 almost always 'overshoot.' Knowing each position's archetype makes reading any line statement faster.
