In Da You the weak (line) has the place of honour, is grandly central, and the strong (lines) above and below respond to it. Hence comes its name of Da You. The attributes (of its component trigrams) are strength and vigour with elegance and brightness.

Great possession · soft governs strong · following heaven
Da You's deepest applications: 'soft governs strong' + 'heaven blesses'. True abundance is empty receiving, not full grasping. Peak: line 5's 'trust + dignity' + line 6's 'heaven's blessing' — sincerity, gravity, heavenly alignment.
Line 3's 'small men can't' — the modern divide of the successful. Same high position; the noble offers to higher purpose, the small hoards privately. Abundance is the moral test.
For Wang Bi the core of Da You is 'the soft attaining the honored seat' — one yin at the fifth place with five yang turning toward it, the model of governing the strong by softness. The master of abundance must be empty of heart (yin) to have room for so much firmness. The phrase to remember: 'from heaven comes help.'
Cheng Yi stresses the Great Image: 'suppress evil, promote good, and follow the excellent mandate of heaven.' In a time of great possession, the task is moral discernment and guidance, not further accumulation of wealth. He takes six-in-the-fifth — 'his sincerity meets sincerity; with majesty, auspicious' — as the ruling line: the truly rich are both sincere and possessed of dignity.
Zhu Xi is direct: Da You means the greatness of what is possessed. In the hexagram, the single yin at the fifth place occupies the honored seat and all the yang turn to it — the model of 'a center kept empty is what gathers.' From this the student learns that the virtue of abundance lies entirely in the capacity to accommodate, to be sincere, and to follow heaven.
Da You is about how to hold on to abundance. String the lines together and they trace the road wealth has to walk: line 1, 'mindful of hardship, no blame' — newly rich but still remembering how hard the start was, you make no mistakes; by line 4 the momentum is at its fullest, and 'not at his fullest swell' means reining yourself in rather than stretching toward the brim. The master of the hexagram is six-in-the-fifth: one yin in the honored seat, five yang turning to it. Its text — 'his sincerity meets sincerity; with majesty, auspicious' — treat people with honesty and they open their hearts of themselves; real dignity stands without anger. Reach the top line and 'from heaven comes help; auspicious, nothing that does not further' — move with heaven and the blessing arrives on its own. The reverse side is also written into the hexagram: line 3, 'a duke presents his offering to the Son of Heaven; a small man cannot.' The same great abundance, landing in a small man's hands, cannot be carried — and breeds harm besides.
Great possession — abundance on a grand scale. Not just wealth held, but the state of having much entrusted to you. The name of the hexagram.
His, its (archaic possessive, equivalent to 其).
Sincerity, inner truthfulness. In line 5, what draws everyone's hearts open in return.
Swelling, at full flourish. Line 4's warning image: not at his fullest swell — restraint at the peak.
Clear, lucid. The Xiang's word for line 4's discerning clarity — knowing exactly why to hold back.
Protection, blessing from above. The help that comes from heaven in the top line.
The excellent mandate — heaven's decree in its beneficent aspect, to be followed rather than fought.
Hexagram 13, Tong Ren, and Hexagram 14, Da You, are an inverse pair. First there are people of one heart (Tong Ren), and only then great abundance (Da You). The sequence reveals: wealth is not seized — it arrives naturally once the people have gathered.
Of the six lines of Da You, only six-in-the-fifth is yin, and the other five yang all turn to it. This is the exemplary structure of 'soft governing strong' — the yin position (empty, accommodating, harmonious) is what can gather the yang (firm, solid, forceful). Later teachings like 'the highest good is like water' and 'attain emptiness, hold stillness' all correspond to this.
The top line's eight characters — 'from heaven comes help; auspicious, nothing that does not further' — are the most blessed sentence in all 64 hexagrams; Confucius singles them out for citation and explanation in the Xi Ci (Great Treatise). The meaning: one who is truly great in possession and moves in accord with heaven's mandate receives heaven's protection.
The Great Image — 'the superior man suppresses evil and promotes good, following the excellent mandate of heaven' — reveals the ancient Chinese notion of 'wealth entails responsibility': the truly rich should accumulate no further, but instead discern good from evil and guide the common ethos. It is the exact opposite of the later phrase 'rich and therefore ruthless.'
