How to Read a Line — the six-step procedure for reading a single line within a hexagram

The line is your specific spot

The hexagram gives you the overall situation: its time, its tendency, and how the two three-line forces interact. The line gives you your specific spot within that situation.

This is why moving lines matter so much after a cast. The Yi doesn't just hand you the picture; it points to exactly where in that picture you are right now. Reading the line means reading yourself.

The six steps

For each line, follow six steps. The first two establish who you are and when this is. The middle two examine structural relationships: correspondence and proximity. The last two examine hierarchical order: which line carries, and which rides.

1
位wèi
Position: which of the six lines

Each of the six positions has an archetype. Line 1 (chu) is the beginning, just emerging. Line 2 (er) is the inner-trigram center: minister, the people, or domestic affairs. Line 3 (san) is the dangerous transition between the inner and outer trigrams. Line 4 (si) starts the outer trigram, close to the ruler, and stands for execution or counsel. Line 5 (wu) is the outer-trigram center, the ruler's seat. Line 6 (shang) is past the peak: retired, overshot, or merely observing. Before reading any line, anchor it on this map.

2
時shí
Time: what stage of this hexagram's situation

The hexagram gives the overall situation; the line is your stage within it. The same position means something entirely different from one hexagram to the next: line 5 of Qian is the soaring dragon at full power, while line 5 of Zhun is the peak of difficulty, where pushing further turns unlucky. Reading a line presupposes reading the hexagram's time first.

3
應yìng
Correspondence: pairs lines 1 and 4, 2 and 5, 3 and 6

The six lines pair across: 1 and 4, 2 and 5, 3 and 6. Opposite types, one yin and one yang, form correspondence: external support, resonance, or a partner. The same type forms no correspondence, or even outright repulsion between likes. Correspondence describes long-distance structural relationships: where your allies and adversaries sit.

4
比bǐ
Proximity: adjacent line relationship

Adjacent lines form proximity. Opposite types adjacent means cooperation and mutual help. The same type adjacent means friction between equals. Proximity describes the immediate-neighbor force: colleagues, peers, the closest link.

5
承chéng
Carrying: yin below yang, proper deference

When yin sits below yang, the yin carries, supports, and yields to the yang above. Structurally this is proper: the subordinate serves the senior. A line showing this pattern usually carries a positive note, the proper order of below supporting above.

6
乘chéng
Riding: yin above yang, improper overstep

When yin sits above yang, the yin rides and overpowers the yang below. Structurally this is inverted: the subordinate sits above the senior. A line showing this pattern is usually a warning, the natural hierarchy reversed, with the one who should defer now dominating.

Zhong and zheng: two anchor concepts

Two more concepts appear throughout line reading. Zhong (centered): lines 2 and 5 are the centers of the inner and outer trigrams, carrying the weight of holding the middle without extremes. Zheng (correct): yang in an odd position (1, 3, 5) is correct, and yin in an even position (2, 4, 6) is correct; otherwise the line is wrongly positioned. Zhongzheng: when line 2 is yin and line 5 is yang, a line is both centered and correct at once, the strongest structural configuration in the system. Most hexagrams' strongest line lives here.

Example 1: Qian line 5
乾
Hex 1

Reading: pure yang reaches the ruler's position, centered and correct, yet with no helpful relationships. “Flying dragon in the heavens” is not borrowed power; it is the ruler's own virtue made fully visible. The phrase “advantageous to see the great person” is the hidden caution: a pure-yang ruler at this height still needs to actively seek out great-person counsellors to balance the risk of excess strength. Being centered and correct is self-sufficient, but not safe from itself.

Example 2: Zhun line 5, right structure but wrong time
屯
Hex 3

Reading: structurally, this is close to ideal: centered and correct, with correspondence and proximity on both sides, and carrying from below. Yet the line statement says “great firmness brings misfortune.” Why? Because the time is wrong. Zhun is the whole-hexagram time of sprouting difficulty, and no amount of structural rightness overrides the situation's overall stage. So “small firmness is auspicious, great firmness is unlucky”: small actions work, big actions fail. Apply effort in small measures, and wait for the time before acting big.

This is the most important lesson in line reading: structure cannot override time. Even when a line is centered, correct, and well supported, if the overall time is sprouting difficulty, big action still fails. Read the hexagram's time first, or every structural observation will mislead you.

Relation to 'How to Read the Image'

The two methods complement each other: reading the image gives you time and tendency; reading the line gives you your specific spot. Order matters: image first for time, then line for position, then connect the two before reading the text itself. Never jump straight to the words; always image first, then position, and only then the text.

練習

Practice

Pick three hexagrams: Hexagram 3 (Zhun), Hexagram 29 (Kan), and Hexagram 63 (Jiji). Walk through line 5 of each using the six steps, then walk through line 2 of the same hexagrams. Compare how the ruler at line 5 and the minister at line 2 fare under the same overall time. For more depth, see the Position Index for how each position behaves across all 64 hexagrams.
