The Great Image derives conduct from the two trigrams' natural images.Great Image

Whole image

Words

The received text, then the Tuan commentary on it.

The judgment on the hexagram as a whole.
Judgment

Xu intimates that, with the sincerity which is declared in it, there will be brilliant success. With firmness there will be good fortune; and it will be advantageous to cross the great stream.

Tuan Zhuan — explains the name, the Judgment and the line structure.
Commentary on the Judgment

Xu denotes waiting. (The figure) shows peril in front; but notwithstanding the firmness and strength (indicated by the inner trigram), its subject does not allow himself to be involved (in the dangerous defile);—it is right he should not be straitened or reduced to extremity. When it is said that, 'with the sincerity declared in Xu, there will be brilliant success, and with firmness there will be good fortune,' this is shown by the position (of the fifth line) in the place assigned by Heaven, and its being the correct position and that of the centre. 'It will be advantageous to cross the great stream':—going forward will be followed by meritorious achievement.

Lines

One statement per line, read from the first line to the top. The figure is drawn bottom-up — watch the rail.

Use

Apply the image to your situation; take one practical step.

Clouds already in the sky — rain has not yet come. Clouds do not hurry; the rain arrives in its time.

Apply the image to your situation
  4. 六四從危機中順出yielding out of crisis

Xu and Conflict (hexagram 6) are inverse. Waiting and quarreling are two outcomes of the same structure — wait correctly, no fight; wait incorrectly, fight inevitable. Reading Xu always implies reading Conflict — are you currently waiting or already quarreling?

Practical move

Xu teaches 'composure in waiting.' Three operations: (1) the judgment's three conditions — inner sincerity (inner steadiness) + brilliant penetration (clarity on why you wait) + correct good fortune (firm correctness). All three or none. (2) The Great Image 'eating, drinking, and feasting' — don't lose ordinary mind in waiting; no anxiety, no performance. (3) Match yourself to one of five line-positions: are you waiting at the 'outskirts' (safe, with patience) or in the 'mud' (inviting trouble)? The deepest failure is line 3's 'waiting in the mud' — waiting in the wrong place actively summons problems.

Failure mode

Misreading Xu as 'I'll just hang here and procrastinate' — wrong. Xu is not procrastination; it is sincere + illuminated + correct active waiting. The deepest failures: line 3's 'waiting in the mud' — waiting in the wrong place actively summons trouble. Or line 6's 'unexpected guests' arriving and you're not ready to receive them respectfully — the wait yielded a result, but you weren't prepared.

魏晉 · 3rd c.王弼《周易注》Wang Bi, Commentary on the Zhou YiScholarly

Xu means 'must wait.' Peril is ahead, the firm is behind — one must use this to await the right time. Dwelling in the time of waiting: firm-and-vigorous yet not falling in — this is the proper attainment. "Eating, drinking, and feasting" clarifies the way of waiting — do not lose your usual ease through the hardship.

北宋 · 11th c.程頤《伊川易傳》Cheng Yi, Yichuan's Commentary on the YiScholarly

Peril ahead, hence Xu (waiting). Firm-and-vigorous yet able to wait — this is proper attainment. The way of Xu: firm-and-vigorous and self-sufficient, not requiring outside aid; therefore at ease in eating and drinking. Inner sincerity is the true virtue within; brilliant penetration is the radiant clarity; correctness leads to good fortune. The sage observing this exhausts the way of awaiting the right time.

南宋 · 12th c.朱熹《周易本義》Zhu Xi, The Original Meaning of the Zhou YiScholarly

Xu means 'wait.' Peril ahead — one cannot hastily advance — hence Xu. The hexagram's quality is firm-and-vigorous, not falling into the peril — therefore in the end one is able to cross. Inner sincerity is sincerity itself; brilliant penetration with correct good fortune means: only after attaining brilliant correctness does fortune follow.

現代 Contemporary現代傳承(繼承倪海廈《天紀》象-first 讀法之精神,非逐字轉錄)Modern lineage (inheriting the spirit of "Tian Ji", not transcribing)Introductory

Xu is about waiting. Clouds rise over heaven and rain is gathering; danger lies ahead, and if you cannot cross yet, you do not cross. This waiting is anything but passive. The judgment spells out its quality — inner truth, light, correctness — a wait that holds because something real holds it up. The most important sentence in the hexagram is the Great Image: the noble one eats, drinks, and is at ease. The skill of waiting shows in ordinary composure; eat when it is time to eat, sleep when it is time to sleep. A wait spent gritting your teeth does not last. The six lines are six waiting positions. Line one waits in the outskirts, farthest from the danger and safest; the higher you climb, the closer the peril presses. Line three waits in the mud — the wrong spot, and it invites robbers. Line five waits over food and drink, composure regained, the right seat. By the top line the waiting is over, yet what arrives is three uninvited guests; treat them with respect and it still ends well. Outcomes rarely follow the script, but the right bearing carries them. And remember that Xu turned upside down is Song, Conflict: wait well and there is nothing to fight over; fail to wait, and the fight comes looking for you.

Wait, await; also 'need.' The hexagram's central image is a forced pause due to obstacle ahead — but the pause is active, not passive.

Inner sincerity / trust. Without 孚, waiting becomes restless; with 孚, waiting is light. This character recurs throughout the Yijing as the inner state required for any holding pattern.

jiāo

Outskirts, the distant border. Line 1's location — far from the danger. Wait at safe distance with patience.

shā

Sand. Line 2's location — at water's edge. Closer to risk; expect some criticism but hold the center.

Mud. Line 3's location — already wet/dangerous. Waiting in the wrong place actively invites trouble.

酒食jiǔ shí

Wine and food, a feast. Line 5's image: waiting with composure, not with anxiety. The mature mode of holding pattern.

'Unhastened guests' = unexpected visitors. Line 6's resolution: when the wait ends, what arrives may not be what you expected — handle it with respect.

Position in the hexagram sequence

Xu Gua (the Sequence of the Hexagrams): 'Once young things have begun, they must be nourished; therefore Xu follows. Xu is the way of feeding. Where there is feeding there must be quarreling; therefore Conflict follows.' Xu sits after Youthful Folly (hexagram 4) — young things must be fed (the way of waiting/feeding); after Xu comes Conflict (hexagram 6) — feeding inevitably brings dispute. Waiting / feeding / quarreling form a continuous three-hexagram arc.

Inverse pair with Conflict (hexagram 6)

Xu read upside-down is Conflict (hexagram 6, Heaven over Water). Xu: peril ahead / firmness behind, hence wait. Conflict: peril behind / firmness ahead, hence quarrel. The same force-pair in two outcomes (wait / fight) — the two classic modes of handling conflict in Chinese thought.

The cultivation tradition of "eating, drinking, and feasting"

The Great Image 'the gentleman eats, drinks, and feasts' has shaped Chinese hermit / scholar-official philosophy across the ages. From Zhuangzi's 'free wandering' through Tao Yuanming's 'plucking chrysanthemums by the eastern hedge,' Su Shi's 'Dongpo pork' in his Huangzhou exile, modern Zhou Zuoren's 'Bitter Tea Hut' — all stand in the wisdom of 'composure in waiting.' Reading Xu enters this 'unhurried wisdom' tradition.

The systematic role of 'fu' (sincerity) in the Yijing

'Fu' (sincerity) appears dozens of times across the 64 hexagrams — one of the Yijing's most important inner-state terms. Fu isn't belief or trust — it's inner sincerity + grounded confidence. Xu places fu at the head of its judgment — the first condition of waiting is inner steadiness. Waiting without fu inevitably becomes anxiety.
