The superior man, in accordance with this, when the day darkens, enters (his house) and rests in retirement.
澤中有雷——隨之象（雷藏澤中，靜而隨時）。君子由此體會：當夜晚來臨時就入屋休息（順時而息）。

隨：元亨利貞，無咎。
隨卦——大亨通，利於守正，無咎。隨從之事必伴正道，正則無咎。
Sui (indicates that under its conditions) there will be great progress and success. But it will be advantageous to be firm and correct. There will (then) be no error.
隨，剛來而下柔，動而說，隨。大亨貞無咎，而天下隨時，隨之時義大矣哉！
隨：剛爻（震）來而居於柔爻（兌）之下，動而悅，所以為隨。大亨守正而無咎——天下萬物隨時而動，隨之時義真大啊！
In Sui we see the strong come and place itself under the weak; we have (the qualities of) movement and pleased satisfaction — that is Sui. There is great progress and success in being firm and correct, so that there shall be no error, and all under heaven shall follow at such a time.

官有渝，貞吉。出門交有功。
官位有變動——守正則吉。出門交往有功。
The first NINE shows us one in office whose views are changed. If he be firm and correct, there will be good fortune. (His) going beyond (his own) gate to meet others will lead to achievement.
官有渝，從正吉也。出門交有功，不失也。
官位變動而從正則吉。出門交往有功，不會失。
係小子，失丈夫。
繫於小子（次要的人）——失了丈夫（重要的人）。陰柔不能兼，所從非正。
The second SIX shows us one who cleaves to the little boy, and lets go the man of age and experience.
係小子，弗兼與也。
繫於小子，是不能兼顧。
係丈夫，失小子，隨有求得，利居貞。
繫於丈夫，失了小子——所隨之事有求得，利於居正。能舍小取大。
The third SIX shows us one who cleaves to the man of age and experience, and lets go the little boy. Such following will get what it seeks; but it will be advantageous to adhere to what is firm and correct.
係丈夫，志舍下也。
繫於丈夫，是志在舍下而從上。
隨有獲，貞凶。有孚在道，以明，何咎？
隨從而有所獲——守此凶。但若有誠信於道而光明——何咎？得而能正則無咎。
The fourth NINE shows us one followed and obtaining (adherents). Though he be firm and correct, there will be evil. If he be sincere (however) in his course, and make that evident, into what error can he fall?
隨有獲，其義凶也。有孚在道，明功也。
隨而有獲，按理是凶。有孚在道，是明功的力量。
孚于嘉，吉。
誠信於美善——吉。剛中得位，所隨者皆嘉美。
The fifth NINE shows us one sincerely cleaving to what is excellent. There will be good fortune.
孚于嘉吉，位正中也。
孚於嘉之吉，是位正而中。
拘係之，乃從維之。王用亨于西山。
緊緊拘係——再加以維繫之。君王用此祭享於西山。隨之至極，必須堅固維繫之。
The topmost SIX shows us (the case of) parties laid hold of and bound, and then further secured by ropes. (We see) the king with it presenting his offerings on the western mountain.
拘係之，上窮也。
拘係而又繫之，是上爻已窮。

隨·隨時·從正
Following · timeliness · following the upright
隨卦最大的應用：「隨之以正」+「嚮晦入宴息」。隨從必伴正道，違時不可隨。最高境是九五「孚于嘉」——所隨者是美善之事。最忌九四「隨有獲貞凶」——隨而獲利易亂正。
Sui's deepest applications: 'follow with uprightness' + 'when dark falls, rest'. Following must accompany the right path; don't follow against the times. Peak: line 5's 'sincerity in excellence'. Worst: line 4's 'following with gain' — profit corrupts the right path.
六二「係小子失丈夫」是現代人最常見的失——為了眼前小利而失去長期大義。讀此爻自警：跟對人比跟對方向更重要。
Line 2 'cleaving to the little boy, losing the man' — the modern's common failure. Sacrificing long-term for short gain. Following the right person matters more than following the right direction.
王弼以為隨卦的核心在「剛來下柔」——剛健者主動屈下而隨柔順者，這是真正的隨從之德。卦辭「元亨利貞」四德齊備，但前提是「正」——隨之而不正則凶。
For Wang Bi the core of Sui is 'the firm comes and places itself below the yielding': the vigorous one willingly bends down to follow the compliant — this is the true virtue of following. The Judgment carries all four virtues, yuan heng li zhen, but on one premise: correctness (zheng 正). Following without correctness brings misfortune.
程子強調大象「嚮晦入宴息」——隨之大義是隨時。日落該休息就休息，不可違時而動。彼以九五「孚於嘉」為主——所隨必須是美善之事方為正隨。
Cheng Yi emphasizes the Great Image, 'as darkness falls, enter and rest': the great meaning of Sui is following the times. When the sun sets, rest — do not act against the hour. He takes line 5, 'sincere toward the excellent,' as the ruling idea: only when what one follows is genuinely good is the following correct.
朱子直言：隨者，從也、順也。卦辭「元亨」貴在守正——若所隨非正，雖有所獲亦凶（九四之戒）。學者觀此知：隨之大義在於「擇善而從」。
Zhu Xi is direct: Sui means to follow, to comply. The Judgment's 'great success' hangs on holding to correctness — if what you follow is not upright, even gain turns to misfortune (the warning of line 4). From this the student learns that the great meaning of Sui is 'choose the good and follow it.'
隨講跟從。卦辭給足了「元亨利貞」四德，條件只有一個字：正。跟對了，路全通；跟的東西歪了，跟得再緊也是陪葬。九五「孚于嘉，吉」是正隨的樣子，心裡信的是實實在在的善事，這樣的跟從越深越好。最險的位置反而在九四：「隨有獲，貞凶」，跟著人得了好處，權勢名利往身上聚，哪怕守得正也凶，除非「有孚在道，以明」，利益擺在道理上、來路去路都透亮，纔可無咎。 大象另給了一層日用的讀法：「君子以嚮晦入宴息」。天黑了就進屋歇著，不跟天時擰著幹。隨人之前，先學會隨時。
Sui is about following. The Judgment grants all four virtues — yuan heng li zhen — on a single condition: uprightness. Follow the right thing and every road opens; follow something crooked, and the tighter you cling the deeper you are buried with it. Line 5, 'sincere toward the excellent — auspicious,' is what right following looks like: what your heart trusts is solid, real good, and following like that only improves with depth. The most dangerous seat is line 4: 'following brings gain — even correct, ominous.' You follow someone and the benefits arrive, power and profit piling onto you — dangerous even if you stay upright, unless 'there is sincerity on the way, with clarity': the gains rest on principle, and where they came from and where they go is transparent. Only then, no blame. The Great Image adds an everyday reading: 'the superior man, as darkness falls, goes in to rest.' When night comes, go inside and sleep — don't wrestle the hour. Before learning to follow people, learn to follow the times.
To follow, to comply; also to move with the times. The hexagram's theme carries all three senses.
To change, to shift.
To tie oneself to, to attach to — the image of cleaving to a person.
Sincerity, inner trust — good faith that can be relied on.
Excellent, fine, good — what deserves to be followed.
To grasp, to hold fast; to bind.
To rest in quiet; to retire and repose.
Toward dusk — as the day darkens.
第 17 隨（跟隨）與第 18 蠱（治舊）為一對綜卦+錯卦（卦象的特殊對稱性）。卦序揭示：盲從必生蠱，治蠱要從識正開始。
Hexagram 17 Sui (Following) and Hexagram 18 Gu (Work on the Decayed) are both inverse and opposite of each other — a rare structural symmetry. The sequence carries the lesson: blind following breeds decay, and treating decay begins with learning to recognize what is upright.
大象「君子以嚮晦入宴息」一句揭示了中國人「順時而動」的最簡之道——天黑了就休息，不違自然。後世養生思想多源於此。
The Great Image line — 'the superior man, as darkness falls, goes in to rest' — states the simplest form of the Chinese principle of moving with the times: when it gets dark, rest; do not fight nature. Much of later yangsheng (nourishing-life) thought traces to this sentence.
彖傳「天下隨時」是中國政治哲學的根本——時勢不可逆，順時而為方得人心。後世「順天者昌」即源於此。
The Tuan Zhuan's 'all under heaven follows the times' is a root of Chinese political philosophy: the momentum of the times cannot be reversed, and only acting with it wins the people's hearts. The later maxim 'those who comply with heaven flourish' descends from here.
九四這四字深刻：當你跟隨某人而獲利時，這本身就是危險。為什麼？因為易讓人忘了「從正」之根本。後世「跟對人」之說須與此卦對讀。
Line 4's four characters cut deep: when following someone brings you profit, that fact is itself the danger. Why? Because gain makes it easy to forget the root — following what is upright. The popular wisdom of 'just follow the right person' should be read against this line.
