The ancient kings, in accordance with this, examined the (different) regions (of the kingdom), to see the (ways of the) people, and set forth their instructions.

(The trigram representing) the wind, and that for the earth beneath it, form Guan. The ancient kings, in accordance with this, examined the (different) regions (of the kingdom), to see the (ways of the) people, and set forth their instructions.

Words

The received text, then the Tuan commentary on it.

The judgment on the hexagram as a whole.
Judgment

Guan shows (how he whom it represents should be like) the worshipper who has washed his hands, but not (yet) presented his offerings;—with sincerity and an appearance of dignity (commanding reverent regard).

Tuan Zhuan — explains the name, the Judgment and the line structure.
Commentary on the Judgment

The great Manifester occupies an upper place (in the figure), which consists of (the trigrams whose attributes are) docility and flexibility. He is in the central position and his correctness, and thus exhibits (his lessons) to all under heaven. 'Guan shows its subject like a worshipper who has washed his hands, but not (yet) presented his offerings;—with sincerity and an appearance of dignity (commanding reverent regard):'—(all) beneath look to him and are transformed. When we contemplate the spirit-like way of Heaven, we see how the four seasons proceed without error. The sages, in accordance with (this) spirit-like way, laid down their instructions, and all under heaven yield submission to them.

Lines

One statement per line, read from the first line to the top. The figure is drawn bottom-up — watch the rail.

初六

Use

Apply the image to your situation; take one practical step.

Wind moving across the earth — invisible yet everywhere, the power of observation lies not in display but in persistence.

Apply the image to your situation
  1. 初六粗淺看公司naive view of the company
  3. 六三回顧自己職涯review your own arc

Guan and Lin are the same pair of yang lines in two positions: Lin actively rising; Guan having risen and retreated to observation. One pair, two phases. Reading Guan implies reading Lin.

Practical move

Guan teaches the discipline of observation. Three operations: (1) the judgment 'having washed hands but not yet presented offerings' — in any high-stakes action, leave space for the solemn pre-instant before acting; (2) the six-line progression from naive view → peeping → self-observation → seeing excellence → ruler-self-watch → observing the other — expand the observational scope from self to other to whole; (3) the great image 'tour the regions, observe the people, set forth instructions' — observe first, act second, not command-and-await-feedback.

Failure mode

Misreading Guan as 'I should only watch and never act' — wrong. Guan is observation before action, not perpetual non-action. After 'washing the hands but not yet presenting offerings' the offerings ARE presented; the moment after washing hands carries full sincerity into the action that follows. The failure is also in the lad's view and the peep-through-a-crack — naive or narrow looking, then acting on it. Apparent observation without real observation.

魏晉 · 3rd c.王弼《周易注》Wang Bi, Commentary on the Zhou YiScholarly

Guan is the image of the spirit-way. Yang has retreated to the upper position, the many yin lines look up to it — this is Guan. 'Having washed the hands but not yet presented the offering' is reverence at its highest; 'sincere and dignified' is sincerity at its highest. The sage observes this and establishes the spirit-way as teaching for all under heaven — not speaking, yet transforming.

北宋 · 11th c.程頤《伊川易傳》Cheng Yi, Yichuan's Commentary on the YiScholarly

Guan has two senses: being observed from above, and observing from below. Line 5's yang sits in the honored position; those below look up and are transformed; the five yin lines observe line 5 and comply. The way of Guan values sincerity above all — 'having washed the hands but not yet presented the offering' is the moment when utmost sincerity has not yet manifested. The sage embodies this teaching: without much speaking, the people transform of themselves.

南宋 · 12th c.朱熹《周易本義》Zhu Xi, The Original Meaning of the Zhou YiScholarly

Guan means: by exhibiting the central and correct, becoming what others look up to. It is the hexagram of the 8th lunar month. Yang though faint sits above; yin though abundant sits below — therefore Guan. The moment between washing hands and presenting offerings is when sincerity is most concentrated; this serves as the metaphor.

現代 Contemporary現代傳承(繼承倪海廈《天紀》象-first 讀法之精神,非逐字轉錄)Modern lineage (inheriting the spirit of Tian Ji, not transcribing)Introductory

Guan faces the autumn equinox in the cycle of twelve sovereign hexagrams: yang has withdrawn to the fifth and top lines, and the four below are all yin. The position is high, but the work is watching. Line 5 is looked up to by the yin lines beneath it, and at the same time it watches them. At the summit, see the whole clearly and let the whole see you clearly — that is Guan's first layer. The judgment 'hands washed, offering not yet presented' is drawn with a fine brush: the instant in the rite after the ablution and before the sacrifice is brought forward, when sincerity is stretched tightest and the ceremony has not yet begun. Reserving one such solemn moment before any weighty act matters more than everything that follows it. The six lines lay out a schooling of the eye: line 1's 'child's viewing' sees as a child does; line 2 peeps through a crack and catches a single sliver; higher up, 'viewing my own life' turns the gaze inward; 'viewing the light of the state' sees good governance and wants to serve it; at the last, line 6 'views the other's life,' watching while being watched — each step sees deeper than the one before. The great image closes it: 'inspect the regions, observe the people, establish the teaching.' The ancient kings toured the land and had watched their fill of local ways before laying down instruction. Observe first, act after; the order does not reverse.

guān / guàn

To observe (active) / a tower-view that others observe (passive). Both readings operate in this hexagram.

guàn

Ritual hand-washing before sacrifice. The integrity moment before ceremony begins.

jiàn

To present an offering. The contrast in 盥而不薦: the moment between preparation and action.

yóng

Dignified, solemn appearance. Inner solemnity manifesting outwardly without performance.

童觀tóng guān

The lad's gaze — child-like, unrefined. Adequate for ordinary life, inadequate for governance.

kuī

To peep through a crack. Restricted view; the same word for furtive observation.

guāng

Light, glory. Line 4's '觀國之光' = seeing a country's cultivated brilliance — the moment to enter as guest/servant.

Position in the 12-cycle

Guan corresponds to the 8th lunar month (the autumn-equinox solar term). From one-yin Gou / Coming to Meet (5th month) to six-yin Kun / The Receptive (10th month), Guan is the midpoint — yin past half but not fully ascendant. Guan's 'high-position-while-retreating' wisdom is the template for the whole declining phase.

Inverse pair with Lin (19)

Guan and Lin (Approach, hexagram 19) read upside-down to each other — inverse hexagrams. Lin: two yang lines rising from below to oversee from above; Guan: the same two yang lines having retreated to the top, observed from below. One pair of yang lines in two states (advancing / retreating). Reading Guan implies reading Lin.

'Spirit-way teaching' as political philosophy

The Tuan Zhuan's line 'the sage establishes teaching by the spirit-way' is a core formulation of Han-Tang political thought. The 'spirit-way' is not mysticism but the political wisdom of 'transformation without speaking' — those above influence all-under-heaven through their own solemnity, sincerity, and example, not through harsh commands. Stands opposite the Legalist 'clear laws and heavy punishments.'

Self-observation vs. other-observation

The six lines include 'observe my life-course' twice (lines 3, 5) and 'observe his life-course' once (line 6). Three different observational orientations — line 3's self-observation as beginner's practice; line 5's self-observation as the ruler's; line 6's observation of the other as self-reflection through another's path. Complete Guan holds both self-observation and other-observation; neither alone is sufficient.
