Dui has the meaning of pleased satisfaction. The strong (lines) are in the centre, and the weak on the outer edges, (indicating that) in pleasure what is most advantageous is the maintenance of firm correctness.

Joy · uprightness · learning with friends
Dui's deepest application: joy that holds. The judgment 'progress, benefit through correctness' (heng li zhen) is the core — joy passes through but only stays through correctness. Lines 1-2 are real joy (harmony, sincerity); lines 3 and 6 are false joy (engineered, solicited).
Line 3 'engineered joy' is the modern consumer's failure mode — manufacturing or chasing stimulation to fill an inner void. True joy comes from inner harmony, not external stimulus.
Wang Bi takes the core of Dui to be 'firm within, soft without' (gang zhong rou wai 剛中柔外) — solid virtue inside, gentle pleasure showing outside. Only such joy can last. The two characters most worth remembering here are li zhen 利貞: joy must rest on correctness, and without correctness a joy does not endure.
Cheng Yi stresses the Great Image: 'the superior man joins with friends in discussion and practice.' The highest application of Dui's joy is the joy of fellow students learning together — a joy with substance and rightness in it, not a floating pleasure.
Zhu Xi says plainly: Dui means pleasure (yue 說/悅). Two lakes joined above and below — the image of friends nourishing each other. The judgment's three characters, heng li zhen 亨利貞, give the caution: joy does pass through, but it must be correct. Observing this, the student learns that joy as a virtue comes in genuine and counterfeit forms.
Dui is joy. The Tuan commentary names the skeleton: 'firm within, soft without.' There has to be something real inside before the outside can be pleasant — and before the pleasure can last. The lines sort real joy from fake. Line 1, 'harmonious joy, auspicious,' and line 2, 'sincere joy, auspicious' — joy from good temper, joy from good faith — both stand on their own. Line 3, 'joy that comes courting, ominous,' flips it: empty inside, going around soliciting happiness that others hand over, and what is begged never stays. The Great Image gives the practice: 'the superior man joins with friends in discussion and practice' — joy that grows from working through things with people on the same path has roots. Most of the stimulation now fed to our eyes runs on the line-3 pattern: exciting while you watch, emptier when it ends. To test whether a joy is real, ask whether it grew from your own heart or was passed to you from outside.
(1) Lake, marsh — the trigram image. (2) Joy, pleasure — in old script 說 meant delight.
Delight, pleasure. In classical texts interchangeable with 兌 (and with 悅).
Sincerity, good faith — trust that is inwardly real, not performed.
Paired, adjoining. Here not 'beautiful' — two lakes lying side by side, feeding each other.
To deliberate, weigh. Line 4's unquiet weighing of where to take one's pleasure.
Boundary; firm as a boundary-stone. Drawing the line resolutely.
To strip away, to injure. Here a figure for the petty person who would wear you down.
To draw in, attract. Line 6's passive soliciting of others' pleasure — joy no longer self-generated.
Dui is one of the eight pure hexagrams. It governs the west, the autumn equinox, the youngest daughter, and joy.
Dui (58) and Gen (52) are opposites — every line flipped. One is the virtue of joy, the other the virtue of stopping. The ancients read the pair together: whoever can enjoy must be able to stop, and only one who can stop can truly enjoy.
The Great Image's 'the superior man joins with friends in discussion and practice' became the later Confucian warrant for the joy of fellow students. The Analects' 'to have friends come from afar — is that not a delight?' says the same thing: real joy comes from learning together with those on the same path.
Dui's judgment looks simple — 'progress; advantageous to be correct and firm' — but li zhen 利貞 is the hinge. Joy can flow, but without correctness it tilts; tilted, it becomes indulgence; indulged, it becomes disaster. The whole virtue of Dui rests on the single character zhen 貞.
