Judgment and its commentary

Read the received text first, then its Tuan commentary.

The judgment on the hexagram as a whole.
Judgment

Wei Ji intimates progress and success. (We see) a young fox that has nearly crossed (the stream), but has wet his tail. There will be no advantage in any way.

James Legge · 1899
Tuan Zhuan — commentary explaining the name, Judgment, and line structure.
Commentary on the Judgment

Wei Ji intimates progress and success — because of the central position of the weak fifth line. The young fox is still in the midst of the stream. There will be no advantage because there is no continuity. Although the lines are not in their proper places, the strong and weak still respond.

James Legge · 1899

The Great Image derives conduct from the two trigrams' natural images; it is not a continuation of the Tuan.

Great Image Commentary

Trigrams → whole image → conduct

Trigrams
· Upper · Fire
· Lower · Water
Whole image

(The trigram representing) fire over (that representing) water forms Wei Ji.

Conduct

The superior man, in accordance with this, carefully discriminates among (the qualities of) things, and the (different) positions they (naturally) occupy.

James Legge · 1899
