Read the image before the words.

The Great Image derives conduct from the two trigrams' natural images.Great Image

Whole image

(The trigrams of) heaven and earth, not in communication with each other, form Pi.

Conduct

The superior man, in accordance with this, restrains (the manifestation of) his virtue, and avoids the calamities (that threaten him). There is no opportunity of conferring on him the glory of emolument.

(The trigrams of) heaven and earth, not in communication with each other, form Pi. The superior man, in accordance with this, restrains (the manifestation of) his virtue, and avoids the calamities (that threaten him). There is no opportunity of conferring on him the glory of emolument.

Words

The received text, then the Tuan commentary on it.

The judgment on the hexagram as a whole.
Judgment

(In Pi we see) the want of good understanding between the (different classes of) men, and its indication is unfavourable to the firm and correct course of the superior man. We see in it the great gone and the little come.

Tuan Zhuan — explains the name, the Judgment and the line structure.
Commentary on the Judgment

'The want of good understanding between the (different classes of) men in Pi, and its indication as unfavourable to the firm and correct course of the superior man; with the intimation that the great are gone and the little come':—all this indicates that heaven and earth are not in communication with each other, and that all things are not in a state of mutual communication; that the high and the low are not in communication with each other, and that there are no (well-regulated) states under the sky. The inner (trigram) is made up of the weak and divided lines, and the outer of the strong and undivided; the inner is (the symbol of) weakness, and the outer of strength; the inner is (the symbol of) the small man, and the outer of the superior man. Thus the way of the small man appears increasing, and that of the superior man decreasing.

Lines

One statement per line, read from the first line to the top. The figure is drawn bottom-up — watch the rail.

The first SIX, divided, suggests the idea of grass pulled up, and bringing with it other stalks with whose roots it is connected. With firm correctness (on the part of its subject), there will be good fortune and progress.

Xiao Xiang — short classical commentary on this line.

'The good fortune of pulling up the grass and (the auspice of) firm correctness' arise from the will (of the subject of the line) being bent on (serving) the ruler.

The second SIX, divided, shows its subject patient and obedient. To the small man (comporting himself so) there will be good fortune. If the great man (comport himself) as the distress and obstruction require, he will have success.

Xiao Xiang — short classical commentary on this line.

'The great man, in the midst of the distress and obstruction, comes to have success:'—he does not allow himself to be embarrassed by the herd (of small men around him).

六三
失位含愧out of place

The third SIX, divided, shows its subject ashamed of the purpose folded (in his breast).

Xiao Xiang — short classical commentary on this line.

'He is ashamed of the purpose folded (in his breast):'—the place is not the proper one for him.

The fourth NINE, undivided, shows its subject acting in accordance with the ordination (of Heaven), and committing no error. His companions will come and share in his happiness.

Xiao Xiang — short classical commentary on this line.

'He acts in accordance with the ordination (of Heaven), and commits no error:'—his purpose has fit opportunity.

九五
止息否運ending the block

In the fifth NINE, undivided, we see him who brings the distress and obstruction to an end,—the great man and fortunate. (But let him say), 'We may perish! we may perish!' (so shall the state of things become firm, as if) bound to a clump of bushy mulberry trees.

Xiao Xiang — short classical commentary on this line.

'The good fortune of the great man' arises from the correctness of his position.

The topmost NINE, undivided, shows the overthrow (and removal of) the condition of distress and obstruction. Before this there was that condition. Hereafter there will be joy.

Xiao Xiang — short classical commentary on this line.

'The condition of distress and obstruction having continued to the end, it is overthrown:'—how could it be prolonged?

Use

Apply the image to your situation; take one practical step.

Heaven still above, earth still below — but they don't talk to each other. Surface looks normal; substance is blocked.

Apply the image to your situation
  4. 九四得到改革授權given mandate to fix

Pi and Tai form a rare double-mirror pair. Reminder: stagnation and peace are two phases of one structure — neither is permanent.

Practical move

Pi is the season of blockage, non-communication, energy receding. Drawing Pi is not a disaster forecast — it's the prompt: (1) this is not the time for bold action — 'don't seek glory through office'; (2) hold inner virtue, low outer profile; (3) line 5's 'we might perish, we might perish' is vigilance, not anxiety — repeatedly reminding yourself 'I could lose this' is what helps you hold it; (4) Pi at its end must overturn — line 6 says it directly: 'Pi overturns; first Pi, then joy.' Patient waiting beats forced resistance.

Failure mode

Misreading Pi as 'I should push through' is wrong. The Great Image is explicit: 'restrain virtue, avoid calamity' — go low, stay quiet, don't fight the macro blockage with visible action. The common failure is pushing in Pi, which doesn't break through but exposes you to danger. Pi's wisdom is to hold, not to attack.

魏晉 · 3rd c.王弼《周易注》Wang Bi, Commentary on the Zhou YiScholarly

Pi means 'blockage.' Yin and yang do not interpenetrate; things lose communication. Dwelling in the time of Pi, the gentleman restrains his virtue, avoids calamity, and does not flaunt wealth or status. Line 5's 'we might perish, we might perish; bind to the mulberry roots' is the awareness that Pi is approaching its end, and the discipline of preserving oneself. Pi at its extreme must topple, and toppled Pi reverts to flow — so Pi is not permanently ominous, only one phase of time.

北宋 · 11th c.程頤《伊川易傳》Cheng Yi, Yichuan's Commentary on the YiScholarly

Heaven and earth do not interpenetrate, the myriad things do not communicate — this is the time of Pi. In Pi, the gentleman should not display wealth or status; he should conceal his light and bide his time. Line 5's great person, with the central and correct way, can bring Pi to a halt — though dwelling in Pi he can turn it. Pi's end must topple — line 6's 'first Pi, then joy' explicitly states the inevitability of cyclical reversal. The sage, seeing this, knows the moment of advance and retreat.

南宋 · 12th c.朱熹《周易本義》Zhu Xi, The Original Meaning of the Zhou YiScholarly

Pi means 'not penetrating.' As a hexagram, heaven and earth do not interpenetrate and the two qi do not communicate — therefore Pi. It is the hexagram of the seventh lunar month (early autumn). Three yang lines outside, three yin inside; outside vigorous, inside yielding — but in actuality the inside is soft and the outside hard, the small man inside and the gentleman outside. Therefore Pi.

現代 Contemporary現代傳承(繼承倪海廈《天紀》象-first 讀法之精神,非逐字轉錄)Modern lineage (inheriting the spirit of "Tian Ji", not transcribing)Introductory

Pi is early autumn in the cycle: three yin risen inside, three yang withdrawn to the rim, energy on its way down. Heaven above, Earth below — apparently normal, actually the disease itself: each power keeping to its own quarter, meeting nowhere. What ruins things in Pi is rarely sabotage; it is disengagement. The move inside Pi is contraction, not resistance. The Great Image is blunt: restrain your virtue, avoid the trouble, take no glory in office. Lower your visibility and keep what matters inward. Line 5's refrain — 'it may be lost, it may be lost' — ties that vigilance to the toughest root there is. And the exit is already written at the top: 'Pi overturned; first blockage, then joy.' Blockage exhausts itself. Your work is to hold steady inside it and let it turn, not to spend yourself forcing the reversal.

Blocked, stagnant, refused-to-meet. (Pronounced 'pǐ' in this hexagram name, NOT 'fǒu' the negation.) Image: yang above, yin below — they sit but don't interact.

匪人fěi rén

Not for/of men. Translates roughly as 'not a human-friendly era' — conditions in which human relations don't function properly.

Inverse of Tai's The great recedes; the small advances. Cycle position: late summer / early autumn.

苞桑bāo sāng

A clump of mulberry roots — the most tenacious anchor available. Line 5: tie hope here while saying 'we might perish.'

qīng

To tip over, overthrow. Line 6's signature word: when blockage reaches its end, the structure tips — and the cycle resumes.

Mirror of Tai

Tai (11) and Pi (12) are an exceptional double-mirror pair: each is the other's opposite (every line flipped) AND inverse (read upside-down). The teaching: peace and stagnation are not separate things, they're two phases of one structure. Reading one always implies the other — they're inseparable.

Position in the 12-cycle

Pi corresponds to the 7th lunar month (around early August in solar terms — the 'Beginning of Autumn'). Three yin lines have risen and yang begins to withdraw; the natural correspondence is summer heat declining as cool air emerges. The progression from Tai to Pi spans six months of waning: Tai / Peace (1st month) → Great Power (2) → Breakthrough (3) → Qian / Heaven (4) → Coming to Meet (5) → Retreat (6) → Pi / Standstill (7).

'Restrain virtue, avoid calamity' as political wisdom

The Great Image's 'the gentleman restrains virtue and avoids calamity, not glorifying himself with office' is among the Yijing's most direct guidance for chaotic times. Across dynasties, great Confucians at the end of regimes or in wartime invoked this line as their stance: Tao Yuanming refusing to bow for five pecks of rice, late-Ming scholars Gu Yanwu and Huang Zongxi withdrawing to write, modern Wang Guowei's suicide, Chen Yinke's exile to the south — all practiced this 'restrain virtue, avoid calamity.' Reading Pi is not merely personal divination; it enters a cultural lineage of self-conduct wisdom.

'We might perish' and 'thinking of danger in safety'

Line 5's 'we might perish, we might perish; bind to the mulberry roots' flows into the later traditions of 'thinking of danger while at peace' and Mencius's 'life springs from worry, death from comfort.' 'We might perish' is not anxious fear, it's structural vigilance: continually thinking 'I might lose this' is what allows you to hold it. In Pi, this is the inner method by which the great person can 'halt the Pi' (line 5). Read Pi not only at the surface of blockage, but for the kind of vigilance line 5 teaches.

  1. line-read

Identify the meaning of each character: 否 (pǐ), 匪 (fěi), 苞 (bāo), 桑 (sāng), 傾 (qīng).

  3. parse

Is the line 5 cry "we might perish, we might perish" anxiety or vigilance? Why is the difference important?
