How to Read a Cast for Your Situationcast → reading → next move

What do you do after casting?

After casting, the common stuck point is: "So what?" This page is a structured guide for connecting the hexagram to real-life next moves. Three principles first: the Yijing isn't predicting the future — it's unfolding the present structure. The hexagram doesn't make your decision; it surfaces the timing, position, and relationships behind the choice. The same hexagram means different things to different people in different situations — so any reading must always be anchored to your specific context.

Seven-step procedure
    Write the question precisely

Write your question in concrete terms. Not "how is my luck this year?" or "will I succeed?" — those are too abstract. Ask something like "should I take this role at X company?" or "how should I handle my conversation with Y?" — questions with actual options and a time frame. The hexagram's precision tracks your question's precision.

Cast and record the six lines

Use the casting page with coin oracle or the Yarrow method. Record everything: which method, which hexagram, whether there are changing lines, which ones. Write it all down, not just the hexagram's name.

    Read the primary hexagram's image

Use the six-step image-reading method: upper and lower trigrams, nature image, family roles, verbs, three powers. Don't rush to apply it to your situation. First understand what the hexagram itself is saying.

Read the changing lines (if any)

Changing lines are the key to this moment. They point to what layer of your situation is most active. One changing line: read that line's statement as primary. Multiple changing lines: traditionally read the topmost; or compare with the resulting hexagram. No changing lines: read the hexagram statement as primary — the situation is stable.

Read the resulting hexagram (if lines changed)

The resulting hexagram isn't a prediction — it's a direction. If the situation unfolds naturally, it will tend toward that shape. Compare what changes between primary and resulting: what's shifting? Do you welcome this change or want to head it off?

    Apply 三才 to your situation

Apply the three powers (heaven/timing, earth/conditions, human/actors) to your concrete situation: what's the state of timing? resources? the people involved? Which layer is the hexagram signaling most strongly? If heaven, attend to timing. If human, attend to relationships. If earth, attend to resources or structure.

    Find 1–3 actionable next steps

Not a grand decision. 1–3 concrete things you can do today or this week. The casting's guidance should ground in "my next action is X" — otherwise you'll stay in the "aha, I see" moment and do nothing.

Worked example: should I take this role?

Worked example: you ask "should I take the VP role at X?" and cast 屯 (Hex 3) with line 1 changing. The hexagram says: opening difficulty, motion in peril. The line says: hesitate, don't rush — install the right governing person first. The changed hexagram 比 (Hex 8) says: the trajectory is toward partnership and alignment. Three-power lens: timing isn't fully ready, conditions need verification, key people need vetting. Operational next steps: don't decide yet; have 2–3 deep conversations with key future collaborators; verify the conditions for the partnership-trajectory before committing. The cast didn't answer "yes or no" — it surfaced the structure of the decision and pointed at what to do to clarify it.

Several important don'ts

A few important don'ts. Don't ask the same question repeatedly hoping for a different answer. Don't take 吉/凶 literally — they mean "with the flow / against the flow," not "you'll get rich / suffer." Don't ask outside the hexagram's domain (lottery numbers, lifespan). Don't substitute a casting for actual communication — for interpersonal situations, the cast clarifies your view, not the other person's. Don't forget the cast reflects the present — weeks later, a different cast for a shifted situation isn't contradictory, it reflects time moving.

Long-term cumulative effect

Long-term, two things happen. First, you get better at reading your own situational structure, with or without the hexagram — the cast trains the skill, and the skill internalizes. Second, you start seeing the 64 hexagrams not as 64 entries but as a taxonomy of recurring life patterns. The same hexagrams will come up across years because you keep encountering the same structural situations — and seeing that lets you exit the loop. This is what 倪海廈 ultimately taught: the Yijing isn't a tool, it's a frame for seeing the world. Used long enough, you stop needing to cast — you read directly.
