Whole image

(The trigram representing) thunder, repeated, forms Zhen.

Conduct

The superior man, in accordance with this, is fearful and apprehensive, cultivates virtue, and examines his faults.

The judgment on the hexagram as a whole.
Judgment

Zhen indicates progress and success. When the time of movement comes, (its subject) will be found looking out with apprehension, and yet smiling and talking cheerfully. When the movement comes like a startling peal, he will be awe-struck on every side; but he does not let go his sacrificial spoon and chalice.

Tuan Zhuan — explains the name, the Judgment and the line structure.
Commentary on the Judgment

Zhen indicates progress. The fear and dread it inspires brings about blessing. The cheerful smiling and talk afterward shows that there are rules of conduct.

Apply the image to your situation
Sudden crisis emerging — humility transforms it into blessing.
In the shake, release some gains; they return in seven days.
Shaken awake, act immediately — no error.
In turmoil, sinking into compromise — losing reform's light.
Senior position in tumult — hold core duties; no big loss.
Watching the neighbor get struck — heed the warning, avoid the same.
Practical move

Crisis posture. The judgment's 'not letting go the sacrificial chalice' is the height of cultivation — keeping your ritual, rhythm, and duty even amid great shock. Two postures: awe during the shake, ease after.

Failure mode

Line 4 'sinking in mud' — the modern failure under stress: not knocked down, but stuck in endless processing and analysis, missing the window for clean reform.

Wang Bi takes the core of Zhen to be 'fear, then blessing' — no one can live in constant fear, but the occasional great shock that makes a person draw in and examine himself gives rise to good fortune. The deepest phrase of the Judgment is 'he does not drop the ladle and libation' (bu sang bi chang 不喪匕鬯): to keep the ritual steady through a great shock is the test of cultivation.

Cheng Yi stresses the Da Xiang: 'the superior man, in fear and dread, cultivates himself and examines his faults.' Zhen does not teach fearlessness; it teaches cultivation within fear. To be able to fear and able to examine oneself — that is the right way to read this hexagram.

Zhu Xi puts it plainly: Zhen is movement, and heng means going through. A fearful heart can bring blessing, because it makes a person draw in; the smiling and easy talk come afterward, because after the shock one's conduct has rule. From this the student learns that reverent awe (jing wei 敬畏) is itself a virtue.

Modern lineageIntroductory

Zhen is thunder. The line that matters most in the Judgment is 'the thunder startles for a hundred li, and he does not drop the ladle and libation': the crash frightens people a hundred li away, and the one presiding over the sacrifice doesn't spill the spoonful of wine in his hand. Holding your own rhythm and your own duty inside an earth-shaking commotion — that is where cultivation shows. Line 1 writes out the whole arc: 'the shock comes and he is watchful with dread; afterward, laughter and easy talk — auspicious.' When the shock arrives, know fear; when it has passed, talk and laugh as usual. Fear and composure each have their hour: dread in the face of the event is reverence, turning the page once it's over is steadiness, and the order can't be reversed. The Da Xiang says 'the superior man, in fear and dread, cultivates himself and examines his faults' — a sudden event gives you a jolt, and the jolt is exactly the occasion to check yourself over.

Eight pure hexagrams · doubled thunder

Zhen is one of the eight pure hexagrams (doubled trigrams). It governs the east, the spring equinox, the eldest son, and movement.

Zhen as the gate of spring equinox

In Jing Fang's hexagram-breath (gua qi) sequence, Zhen guards the seasonal gate of the spring equinox — the moment when all things shake themselves awake and emerge. Mapped onto a life, it is 'the time to get up.'

Thunder reaching a hundred li — the ancient ruler's image

The phrase 'the thunder startles for a hundred li, and he does not drop the ladle and libation' is traditionally read as the steadiness of the eldest son presiding at the sacrifice in his father's place. The great question of ancient royal succession lay precisely here: can the son hold the rite through a great shock?

Zhen and Xun as opposites

Zhen (51) and Xun (57) are opposites, every line flipped — one the movement of thunder, the other the penetration of wind. Movement without penetration is violence; penetration without movement is weakness.
