Position Index — what each of the six line positions means across all 64 hexagrams
每個 64 卦由 6 條爻組成，從下往上。同一個位置（例如「五爻」）在 64 個不同卦裡都有自己的爻辭， 但 位置本身 帶有一貫的教學——五爻幾乎永遠是「君位 / 中正」、上爻幾乎永遠是「過 / 退」。 知道每一爻位的 普遍 性格之後，讀任何卦的爻辭都會快很多。
Every 64-hexagram has six lines, bottom to top. The same position (say, line 5) carries a different statement in every hexagram — but the position itself carries a consistent teaching. Line 5 is almost always 'ruler / centered'; line 6 is almost always 'overshooting / withdrawal.' Knowing each position's general character makes reading any line statement much faster.

最高、最後一爻。傳統上叫 過位——已經到頂了，再往上就是越界、就是後悔。乾卦上九「亢龍有悔」是經典案例。讀到上爻常見的智慧是：認清此刻是 收手、是退、是讓位，而不是 再推一次。
The highest, final line. Traditionally the 'overshooting position' — at the peak, any further push crosses the line into regret. 乾 line 6 'soaring dragon regrets' is the classic case. The recurring wisdom: at line 6, the moment is to stop, withdraw, yield — not to push once more.

上爻的「凶」常常不是來自外力，是來自 自己 不收手。看到上爻有警示語，先檢查是不是該停的時候自己沒停。
Line 6's misfortune typically isn't external — it's from not stopping. When line 6 carries warnings, first check: is this a moment I'm refusing to stop?
九五 / 六五Line 5
君 · 中正

上卦的中間位置，全卦的最重要位——「君位」。位置正、時機到、有實力且能合作。乾卦九五「飛龍在天」是 64 卦中最完美的位置之一。讀任何卦時，特別注意 五爻——它常常是整卦的核心信號。
The center of the upper trigram, and the most important line of the entire hexagram — the 'ruler's position.' Well-placed, timely, capable, collaborative. 乾 line 5 'dragon soaring in the sky' is among the most fortunate positions in all 64 hexagrams. When reading any hexagram, pay special attention to line 5 — often the central signal of the whole.

五爻不是自動的吉。屯卦九五「屯其膏」就明顯說：在困境裡的君位，做大事仍有險。位置好不等於萬事順。
Line 5 isn't automatically auspicious. 屯 line 5 'gifts dammed up' shows: a ruler in a stuck context still faces danger in big moves. Good position ≠ everything works.
九四 / 六四Line 4
懼 · 近君

上卦的最低位，緊鄰 五位（君位）。傳統上叫 多懼 之位——位置敏感，動作大會犯上、動作小會錯過機會。常見的解法是 試探、漸進，不要 一次押滿。乾卦九四「或躍在淵」就是這個：跳一下試試，留有餘地。
The lowest line of the upper trigram, immediately below the ruler position (line 5). Traditionally the 'anxious position' — sensitive: large moves overstep the ruler, small moves miss the moment. The common solution: probe, advance gradually, don't commit. 乾 line 4 'leaping yet still in the deep' embodies this — try, hold options open.

四爻常見「无咎」「无譽」這種「不會錯但也沒大成」的語氣。這正是該位置的特徵。
Line 4 often carries 'no blame' and 'no praise' tones — exactly fitting the position's neither-here-nor-there character.
下卦的最高位，也是上下卦的交界。傳統上被視為 多凶 之位——剛剛從基礎升上來，還沒到頂，責任最重、風險最大。乾卦九三「終日乾乾，夕惕若，厲」就是這個處境：要不停地警覺、做功課，才不會出錯。
The top of the lower trigram, also the boundary between lower and upper. Traditionally a dangerous position — risen above the foundation, not yet at the peak; heaviest responsibility, highest risk. 乾 line 3 'vigilant all day, careful by evening, dangerous' captures it: relentless vigilance is what saves this position.

三爻位常出現警示語（厲、悔、吝）。讀到三爻時，特別注意它的爻辭裡有沒有警告字眼。
Line 3 often carries warning words (厲 dangerous, 悔 regret, 吝 difficulty). Watch for these explicitly when reading.
九二 / 六二Line 2

下卦的中間位置。「中位」之一，傳統上是吉位——位置正、力量足、不過分。常被讀為 自然顯現、不勉強就有成果 的階段。乾卦九二「見龍在田」就是這個——龍出現了，被看見了。
The center of the lower trigram. One of the two 'central positions,' traditionally auspicious — well-placed, sufficient force, not excessive. Often read as the moment of natural emergence — visible without effort. 乾 line 2 'dragon appears in the field' captures this.

九二 / 六二 雖然是吉位，仍要看 上下整卦的支持。中位也會被困境的整體拉下去。
Even at this auspicious position, the surrounding hexagram matters. A central line can still be dragged down by an unfavorable overall context.
初九 / 初六Line 1
始 · 隱
beginning · hidden
地 · Earth
最下面的一爻。事情剛剛開始的位置——能量在、但還沒到行動的時機。傳統上叫「潛」，意思是潛伏、隱藏。這個位置常見的智慧是：先別動，先看清楚。
The lowest line. The very beginning of a situation — energy present, action not yet timely. Traditionally called 'submerged.' The recurring wisdom: don't move first; observe.
注意 · Watch
誤用：把「潛」讀成「永遠不出手」。潛是時機，不是命運。
Misreading: taking 'submerged' as 'never act.' It's about timing, not fate.
使用方式 · How to use
讀任何一個爻辭時，先想：這條爻在第幾位？該位的 普遍教學 是什麼？ 然後再對照具體爻辭，看看它和該位的普遍教學是 順 還是 逆。 順的話卦在強化普遍教學；逆的話特別注意——卦在告訴你 此情境下這條普遍教學被打破。
When reading any line statement, first ask: which position is this? What's the position's general teaching? Then compare the specific line to that general teaching — does it align (the hexagram reinforces the position's archetype) or contradict (the hexagram is signaling that, in this specific situation, the general rule breaks)? This dual reading is what systematic study unlocks.
